What Is Skin Testing?
Skin testing is a diagnostic tool to discover allergies you may be living with. Allergens are directly applied to the skin, and the skin is monitored for immediate reactions.
Skin testing is typically used for common allergies such as:
- Bee venom allergies
- Allergic asthma
- Dermatitis or eczema
- Food allergies
- Hay fever
- Latex allergy
- Penicillin allergy
It is important to remember that some allergies, such as food allergies, may require additional testing for confirmation. This allergy testing method is usually most effective for airborne allergens, such as dust mites, pet dander, and pollen.
What Could I Expect from the Allergy Testing Process?
During skin testing, a member of our team introduces allergens directly to your skin. While this does involve making small pricks in the skin, there is little pain associated with the process as the needles used minimally penetrate the skin. Once a microchannel is created, the allergen is applied.
Reactions during testing typically displays as mild, itchy rashes. The reactions are often comparable to mosquito bites. If you are experiencing a reaction, our team can make recommendations on how to accommodate your life with an allergy. This may include allergy shots, lifestyle changes, medications, or more.
The skin testing process typically takes less than an hour. Some of this time will be spent relaxing and waiting to see if you are developing a reaction. While some reactions will happen immediately upon contact, some will take longer. Many allergic reactions occur within a few minutes, but some may take a few days. If you experience a reaction within the few days immediately following testing, it is important to follow up with the team at our clinics.
Am I a Good Candidate?
Allergy skin testing is safe and effective for nearly all people of all ages. For adults, tests are typically performed on the forearm. For children, test are typically performed on the upper back. A consultation with our team can help determine how you could benefit from allergy testing as well as what allergens you are most concerned about.
