Patch testing is one of the allergy tests offered at Columbia Allergy. Patch testing can be useful in identifying allergies to materials in your environment such as perfumes, metals, chemicals, beauty products, and much more. Patch testing can be very helpful in determining the cause of skin reactions and reactions that occur when an allergen comes in contact with the skin. This test uses an adhesive patch containing the substances you may be allergic to that is applied directly to your skin, usually on your back.
After the patches are applied, the patient will wear the patch for the next 48 hours, keeping the patch clean and dry. After 48 hours, the patient will return to the clinic to have the patches removed. The specialists at Columbia Allergy will perform an initial reading of the patch test results. The patient will return the next day, at 72 hours after the application of the patches, for a final reading of the patch test. The test results will be used by the specialists at Columbia Allergy to develop a customized allergy treatment plan.
