Columbia Asthma & Allergy Clinic has several locations in Washington, Oregon, and California. It includes such services as allergy testing and immunotherapy. The doctors treat adults and children with conditions like asthma, hives, hay fever, and other issues related to allergies.
What is Oral Immunotherapy?
Oral immunotherapy is a treatment used at Columbia Asthma & Allergy Clinic to desensitize patients with severe food allergies that can cause a life-threatening condition called anaphylactic shock. It may be used to treat patients with the following food allergies:
- Sesame seeds
- Grains like wheat
- Tree nuts
In oral immunotherapy, the allergist will gradually reintroduce the food to the patient’s diet by having them eat it in tiny increments. The patient will start by eating less than a milligram of the food and gradually work up to eating several grams by the end of the treatment. The patient will eat a larger dose of the allergen every day.
What are Lymph Node Injections?
Lymph node injections are a treatment at Columbia Asthma & Allergy Clinic for environmental allergies like the following:
- Cigarette smoke
- Pet dander
Like oral immunotherapy, the injections work by desensitizing the patient to their allergen.
What is a HEPA Filter?
HEPA stands for “high-efficiency particulate air,” so a HEPA filter is an air filter designed to trap allergens like dirt, pet dander, mold spores, and dust mites. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) defines a HEPA filter as one that traps 99.7 percent of dust particles that have diameters of 0.3 microns. A HEPA filter can, thus, also trap mold spores and some bacteria and viruses. HEPA filters are often used with vacuum cleaners and air purifiers, and they enable the patient to more thoroughly clean their home of irritants like dust mites or mold spores.
